The constraint
Patients could hear the drill from the waiting room. Anxiety was measurably affecting appointment cancellations, which the practice tracked.
What we did
Treatment rooms were pulled to the rear of the plan behind an acoustic lobby, and the waiting area was reoriented to face a planted courtyard. Nothing in the waiting room reads as clinical: timber, linen, warm 2700K light, no white.
The result
Recorded sound in the waiting area dropped from 58dB to 41dB. The practice reported a noticeable fall in same-day cancellations over the following year.
