The constraint
The grandparents could no longer manage the staircase, the teenagers needed acoustic separation, and the family altar had to sit in a position that satisfied both feng shui and the fire escape route.
What we did
We converted the underused rear store into a ground-floor suite with a level-access bathroom, and moved the main stair to create a double-height void that carries daylight to the centre of the plan. The altar sits in a purpose-built alcove facing the entrance, ventilated so incense smoke leaves the house rather than the living room.
The result
Everybody keeps their own front door habits and still eats together. The house was handed over four days ahead of the agreed date.
